Ludhiana joins the IT boom – A promising new start up launches its operations from the city.

India may be known as the software superpower the world over but the common perception is that Punjab has largely missed the bus when it comes to the information technology boom in the rest of the country. Has Ludhiana finally joined the IT bandwagon with the launch of a promising new start up at Science and Technology Entrepreneurs' Park at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Gill Road.

Webrosoft Solutions (P) Ltd, a Ludhiana based newly formed information technology company, has announced the launch of its operations with commencement of work at its unit at 13-A, STEP, G.N.D Engineering College, Gill Road, Ludhiana. This unit will export software technology to e-commerce companies providing online shopping services around the world.

Speaking about the unit located at STEP Mr. Jaskirat Singh, the Director of the company said, "Our unit located at 13-A, STEP is registered with STPI Mohali as a 100% Export Oriented Unit under the STPI scheme of Govt. of India. This makes us one of the select few units in the region having this distinction."

Dr. Sanjay Tyagi, Additional Director of Software Technology Parks of India (Mohali) inaugurated the unit. In his speech he said, “I am thrilled to see the setup of Webrosoft that has come up in Ludhiana. You can mark my words, this single event will change the entire face of Information Technology in this city within next one year. I also ask STEP and Webrosoft to collaborate and come up with a finishing school for IT professionals which should provide technical training and soft skills to make IT and engineering graduates employable within the IT industry because college education is not sufficient for that purpose.”

Mr. J S Kular, executive director of STEP announced, “We are going to build an IT Park in STEP that will house about 10 IT start up companies and we will finish it within 2008. We will also be happy to collaborate on the finishing school project with webrosoft under the guidance of STPI .”

Mr. Jaskirat Singh promised full technical support to make the finishing school a reality.

Elaborating on the business plans of the company Mr. Jaskirat Singh said, "We create software for e-commerce which enables retailers to sell their products on the Internet through their websites. E-commerce has seen explosive growth in the last few years and is currently growing at high double digit growth rates in the countries like the US and the UK. Our clients are companies in such countries that want to set up their online retail web stores but do not have expertise within their organization to do so. They outsource this work to specialist companies like ours."

Speaking about the achievements of the company he said, "Our company has also got the membership of the prestigious National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), which is a national consortium of IT companies in India. Currently we are the only member company having its headquarters in Punjab . Mr. Jaskirat Singh informed, "Currently we are a very small team of profesionals but this number is likely to go significantly up very soon. The current set of people are very experienced technology professionals which will form the core of the company.We use a combination of 4 platforms for developing our software. These are Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP. These are together known as The LAMP Stack. We do our programming based on these technologies and our primary requirement right now is programmers who have expertise in these. Other than programmers we are also going to need people with graphic designing and creative writing skills. So in the next 12 months at the present estimates we are looking forward to employing 16 more talented people."
